Advantame is classified as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association for use in dairy, frozen desserts, beverages, and chewing gum (FEMA #: 4716). The Center for Science in the Public Interest ranks advantame as safe, together with neotame from other artificial intensity sweeteners. Animal studies have found no evidence for carcinogenicity or developmental toxicity. It is marketed as 20,000 times sweeter than sugar, but it is not commonly used.
