Basophilia is the condition of having greater than 100 basophils/microliter in the peripheral blood. Basophilia can be attributed to many causes such as inflammatory conditions, allergic diseases, myeloproliferative diseases, infectious diseases such as smallpox, and chronic hemolytic anemia. Basophilia can be detected through a complete blood count (CBC). The cause of basophilia can be determined through a bone marrow biopsy, genetic testing to look for genetic mutations, or ultrasound to determine enlargement of the spleen. Basophilia is associated with pruritus (itching) due to the release of histamine.
