Analysis of Automatic Defence Options for Nigeria: June 27th 2017 Blackout
2018
This paper presents a review of the Nigerian power system collapse of Jun 27th, 2017 as captured by synchrophasor recordings from a distribution panel in Victoria Island, Lagos. A generator unit commitment and dispatch as well as a load flow analysis has been constructed from available records and is used to evaluate current automatic defence options against loss of generation events. Options for automatic switching actions based on a quantitative analysis of feasible islands and for compliance monitoring are proposed to improve the probability that otherwise total collapses are turned partial, and the overall number of collapses are reduced.
