The Role of Applied Cognitive Technology and Assistive Technology in Supporting the Adaptive Behavior of People with Intellectual Disability

Access to and use of technology has become a necessity to participate fully in most societies. This chapter examines the access and use of technology by people with intellectual disability. The chapter discusses assistive technology and applied cognitive technology and barriers to both kinds of technology. Issues of universal design and cognitive access that facilitate access and use are discussed. Then, the chapter discusses how technology can support people with intellectual disability to enhance adaptive behavior and full participation in community living and access, employment, recreation and leisure, and social and communication domains.
