Commercial nuclear power industry views on site cleanup and restoration criteria

1993
Site cleanup criteria are needed for determining when a site is clean enough to allow license termination. Ultimately, a successful rulemaking process must result in a standard that ensures public health and safety and allows site cleanup and restoration for future beneficial uses in a cost-effective manner. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is utilizing an enhanced participatory rulemaking process to gather information from all interested parties prior to the NRC taking a position on the direction or specifics of the rule. The Nuclear Management Resources Council (NUMARC), on behalf of the commercial nuclear power industry, commends NRC for taking this approach and is fully supporting and participating in this ongoing process (e.g., two representatives of the commercial nuclear power industry were at the table for each of the seven 2-day workshops).
