FIRST RESULTS OF CONDITIONING THE NEUTRAL BEAM ION SOURCES FOR TEXTOR

1989
The results of several measuring phases with the neutral beam ion sources on the test bed are reported. The ion sources are modified JET-PINIs designed for 55 kV, 88 A, 4.8 MW. Three PINIs were conditioned on the test bed, two of them will be mounted on the two TEXTOR beam lines. The beam and ion source characterizing data and related diagnostics are described. The perveance matched beam currents were measured at various acceleration voltages. Beam transmission to the main target and thermal losses are calculated from the water calorimetry of the related copper structures such as ion source body, grids, neutralizer, magnet liner and scapers. Beam profiles are obtained from a specially designed differential calorimeter in the horizontal and by the main target plates in the vertical direction. The ion species fractions extracted from the ion source are measured optically by a grating spectrometer using H α – Dopplershift spectroscopy and by a magnetic spectrometer at the end of the beamline. A reliability test with 100 beam pulses was carried out at the required power level for TEXTOR, i.e. 50 kV, 78 A, 3.9 MW, 2 sec. The ion species mix, is 63:23:14 % (H + :H 2 + :H 3 + ), beam transmission 74 % and horizontal divergence 0.97° for these beam pulses.
