The catalytic oxidative coupling of methane: II. Axial gas sample probing in a bubbling Fluidised-Bed reactor and the effect of side reactions

The atmospheric pressure catalytic oxidative coupling of methane was studied in detail by axial gas concentration probing experiments in a 60 mm OD bubbling fluidised-bed reactor system. Experimental data demonstrated a very fast reaction which occurred within the vicinity of the distributor (normally in the first 5 mm of bed height) under normal reaction conditions of 850°C and 83 vol%/17 vol% CH4/O2 feed. The data also showed that hydrocarbon selectivity was deleteriously affected by side reactions which were also promoted by the catalysts even though they were good catalysts for the oxidative coupling reaction. If this reduction in hydrocarbon selectivity is inevitable then there will be optimum operating conditions for each catalyst in the bubbling fluidised bed reactor. On a etudie en detail le couplage oxydant catalytique a pression atmospherique du methane par des experiences visant a determiner le profil de concentration de gaz axial dans un reacteur a lit fluidise bouillonnant de 60 mm de diametre exterieur. Les donnees experimentales demontrent une reaction tres rapide qui survient dans le voisinage du distributeur (normalement dans les 5 premiers mm de hauteur du lit) dans des conditions de reaction normales de 850°C et une alimentation en CH4/O2 de 83 vol.%/17 vol.%. Les donnees montrent egalement que la selectivite des hydrocarbures etaient dangereusement menacees par les reactions secondaires qui etaient egalement favorisees par les catalyseurs, měme s'il s'agissait de bons catalyseurs pour le reaction de couplage oxydant. Si la baisse de la selectivite des hydrocarbures est inevitable, il existe alors des conditions de fonctionnement optimales pour chaque catalyseur dans le reacteur a lit fluidise bouillonnant.
