Navigating the Cyber Museum: Reconstructing Indigenous Living History in A Journey into Time Immemorial

2017
This essay closely examines aspects of the exhibition spaces of the Virtual Museum of Canada website A Journey into Time Immemorial to investigate the relationship between the poetics of new media and contemporary curatorial practices in Indigenous art. This interactive cyber museum merges engaging motion graphics, detailed reconstructions of Sto:lō-Coast Salish cultural landscapes, and video interviews with contemporary Sto:lō-Coast Salish elders to represent the historical practices of Sto:lō-Coast Salish peoples and their enduring significance. The objective of this research is to reflect on how computational tools and platforms were used to design temporality in this reconstruction of Indigenous living history.
