IMPACT OF TRANSLATION ACTIVITIES ON THE WORK OF SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS AND RESEARCH CENTRES

Publisher Summary This chapter analyzes the impact of translation activities on the work of scientific institutions and research centers. The tremendous strides in scientific and technical developments of post-war years claim its assistance at every step. The demand for technical translation grew at such a rapid pace in the post-war years that in 1953 UNESCO thought it useful to survey the situation in the world and published in 1957 a valuable monograph on “Scientific and Technical Translating and Related Aspects of the Language Problem” in which 200 contributors from 21 countries tried to find solutions to many problems. The basic elements of quality in technical translation are: precision, accuracy, and clarity in presenting the technical matter dealt with. This involves linguistic as well as technical knowledge of the translator. The quality therefore, of technical translators depends mainly on the facilities available for such collaboration. The increasing demand of technical translation creates the necessity of establishing translation services in every type of scientific institution whether academic, research, or industrial organization.
