AbstractThe composition and thickness of coloured films produced on copper by selenious acid have been studied. The composition of the films has been determined by a combination of electron and X-ray .diffraction techniques and was found to be Cu1.8Se. The colour produced by the copper selenide is due to interference effects. The thicknesses of these films required to produce various colours were determined by an electrometric technique and were found to vary approximately in the same manner as for copper(I) sulphide and copper(I) oxide. A given thickness of the copper selenide produced approximately the same colour as an equal thickness of copper(l) sulphide or copper(I) oxide.
