Synthesis and Magnetism of Binuclear Nd(III), Gd(III) and Dy(III) Complexes Using the Dianions of Chloranilic Acid as Bridging Ligands

1993
Abstract Three new binuclear Nd(III), Gd(III) and Dy(III) complexes containing the dianion of chloranilic acid (CA) as bridging have been synthesized, namely Nd2(phen)4(CA)(NO3)4 6H2O, Gd2(phen)4 (CA)(NO3)4 6H2O and Dy2(phen)4(CA)(NO3)4 5H2O (CA = dianion of chloranilic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, electronic spectra, ESR, susceptibility and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility. The observed susceptibility data were fit to those from the theoritical magnetic equation by a least-squares method, giving the following parameters: J = -0.21 cm−1, g = 2.01, the agreement factor R = 1 × 10−3 for the complex Gd2(phen)4(CA)(NO3)4 6H2O; Δ = −2.36 cm−1, ZJ′ = −0.543 cm−1, g = 1.382, R = 3 × 10−3 for the complex Dy2−(phen)4(CA)(NO3) 5H2O. These indicate the existence of a weak antiferromagnetic spin exchange interaction among the rare earth ions in the complexes.
