Young's moduli and wear of cermet coatings

2009
AbstractThe Young's moduli and wear characteristics of two cermet coatings were evaluated under normal atmosphere. The tested coatings were WC/12 per cent Co and Cr3C2/25 per cent NiCr made by using high-velocity oxygen fuel spraying. The Young's moduli of the coatings were obtained using cantilever bend tests. The wear characteristics were evaluated on a wear test apparatus. The WC/12 per cent Co was superior to Cr3C2/25 per cent NiCr in view of wear resistance. The Cr3C2/25 per cent NiCr coating exhibited low friction at higher temperature. A relation was found between the Young's modulus, hardness, wear resistance, and the offensiveness to the mating material of the tested coatings.
