Initiation of adventifious buds in tuberous roots of Ipomoea batatas

Abstraer. The anatomical development of axtventitious buds in the tuberous roots of Ipomoea batatas has beca smdied. Only the detached tubers regenerate. The bud primordia d~velop from the procambium-like eells adjoiaing lateral root so 91 Initially, the buds grow away from the surf 91 of the mber but, Later, they turn almost 180 ~ towards the surface of the tuber, before bursting out of the rubor. The growth of the bud is largely conti by random pei divisions of parenehymatous eells of the bud primordium. The basipetally developed vasculature of the bud is conneated to the vasoulature of the lateral root.
