Metal injection molding of titanium

2015
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) of titanium and titanium alloys has experienced a growing interest in both research and industry over the last decades. Today, excellent properties can be achieved, if the specialties of titanium are taken into account. Titanium MIM enables the economic production of high-quality products with complex geometry in high numbers. This chapter gives an overview of the specific issues during feedstock preparation, debinding, and sintering and presents typical mechanical properties of MIM-processed titanium alloys, including Ti-6Al-4V, beta-titanium alloys, and titanium aluminides. Furthermore, the motivation for MIM of titanium, some examples of commercial products, and expected perspectives are introduced. The scientific aspect focuses on the influence of porosity and interstitial content on mechanical properties, as these factors are closely relevant to practical application.
