AUTOMOTIVE POLLUTION CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES. IN: MAKING URBAN TRANSPORT SUSTAINABLE

2003
This chapter first briefly discusses the gaseous pollutants from combustion of fossil fuels, and then reviews the forms that the new generation of vehicle technologies, aimed at reducing pollution, will take. Current research and development of electric vehicles, fuel cells, and hybrid electric engines that will greatly reduce both fuel consumption and emissions are considered. It is highlighted that gasoline engines will still be used for many years to come, and current research into reducing pollution from such engines is discussed. A new development in pollution control is reported that uses microwave energy to treat exhaust gases from standard internal combustion engines, a development capable of extracting most of the carbon from engine emissions along with most other pollutants.
