Finding High Priority Projects for Stellar Physics Through Spectroscopy

The question, “What are the scientifically interesting objects?” finds a ready answer through surveying and monitoring of stars. In such reconnaissance spectral classification remains an effective tool for the smaller telescopes, while current computing power allows the same spectra that are suitable for classification to provide good stellar parameters. The methods and possibilities for automated spectral classification are outlined, as well as suggestions of how to interface these to spectra obtained with large telescopes. Some priority projects are suggested, both for cluster and for field stars. In all this the complementarity between data obtained with small and large telescopes is stressed, since both kinds are needed to understand the most interesting stars.
