Coralcon: An open source low-cost modem for underwater IoT applications

2017
Most underwater deployments rely on acoustics for enabling communication. The equipment for underwater communication is usually very expensive. Simulations of underwater systems are insufficient for many researchers. An open source platform built with commercially available hardware at low rates along with customizable software modules may prove to be very useful for researcher. This paper particularly focuses on the details of Coralcon, a low-cost, open-sources based modem designed to be integrated with underwater Internet of Things (IoT). We implemented Coralcon with a customizable minimal software defined radio (SDR). Coralcon can be interfaced with other equipment to send and receive data reliably at rates up to 1000 bits per sec with one antenna.
