Catholic intellectuals in the portuguese-brazilian space: the contributions of Alceu Amoroso Lima and António Durão (1930-1950).

In this article, it was examined the participation of Alceu de Amoroso Lima and Antonio Durao, as scholars bound to the catholic thought, in the discussions carried out by the PortugueseBrazilian State, within 1930-1950, taking into consideration both governments (Portuguese and Brazilian), in order to establish and to consolidate a national system of education. Accordingly, campaigns of literacy, creation of new schools, universities, instruction organization, and so on, were objects of analysis. The legal actions determined intense debates within the Catholic Church and the State, since these reforms were inspired in modern education, regarded in a broader perspective as public, free and lay, what induced the catholic thinkers to question the new educational principles, issued by the state through the legislation of the educational systems. In the end, several forms of exchange, as well as the nets developed by Alceu de Amoroso Lima together with Portuguese scholars, especially Antonio Durao, about the implications of the state in the educational sphere.
