Study on burning behavior of wood-plastic composites.

2011
The burning behaviors of wood-plastic composites(WPC) and fire-retardant WPC were investigated by testing the ignition time, heat release rate, mass loss, and smoke generation with cone calorimeter in this research.Test results showed that the ignition time of WPC was 27 s,which was longer than that of the plantation wood and similar to that of MDF with a density of 0.86 g/cm3.The peek value of heat release rate(HRR) of WPC was 404 kW/m2,and the total heat released(THR) after combustion for 1 200 s was 180 MJ/m2,and the average effective heat of combustion(HOC) of WPC was 28 MJ/kg which was higher than that of the planted wood. The average mass loss rate(MLR) of WPC was about 7 g/(s·m2),which was lower than that of poplar and masson pine. The total amount of the smoke emitted in the combustion process of WPC was higher than that of the plantation wood. The peek HRR and the MLR of were lower than PP because the wood is dehydrated and given off none combustion composition, for example,water,CO2,CO et al,and take effect as fire retardant. The HRR and THR of WPC treated with fire retardant(nonhalogen and halogen containing fire retardants) has decreased, and the SP has increased, especially the halogen containing fire retardant. Therefore, the halogen containing fire retardant does not fit WPC.
