Dual-polarized Frequency Selective Surface for SOTM applications

2018
This paper presents a dual-polarized Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) illuminated by an array of circular apertures. The FSS eliminates the grating lobes produced by the large separation between the apertures of the array for two orthogonal polarizations. In order to confer the structure a low-profile shape, the FSS is placed at a short distance from the array of apertures. The optimization of the FSS is performed considering just the unit cell of the proposed antenna with periodic boundary conditions. By properly optimizing this unit cell, excellent results in terms of maximum directivity, side-lobe level and bandwidth are obtained. These properties make the proposed antenna ideal for satellite-on-the-move applications.
