B-Cell Development

2010
B lymphocytes protect individuals against invading pathogens by producing antibody-secreting plasma cells. In this chapter we discuss several fundamental concepts concerning the development, activation, and differentiation of B cells. We consider the role of specific transcription factors in the general development of B cells, the process whereby B cells synthesize receptors for antigen selection processes important for regulating potentially self-reactive B cells and the signals that promote the differentiation of pathogen-specific B cells into antibody-secreting cells. We also discuss several assay systems used to evaluate B cell function, and briefly discuss how toxins might interfere with B cell development and/or function.
