Wind farm-power evacuation & grid integration

2013
The Manual on Transmission Planning Criteria notified by the Central Electricity Authority in 2013 provided definite direction for the power system planning for renewable energy sources for the first time. However, some more technical issues remain to be defined for perfect integration of the renewable into the Electricity Grid. Many a time the demand in certain nodes of the power system do not reach the anticipated level as projected. Owing to this, there are many lightly loaded extra high voltage lines. Although, in the planning stage the shunt reactors at various nodes were planned, these were not commissioned on priority. To maintain the system voltage profile during light load periods, opening of the transmission lines is done as an operating practice. Opening of such lines caused tripping of wind turbine generators, when they started to generate. The paper attempts to bring out such specific experiences of wind power generation.
