A method for the detection of critical driving situations of automobiles, in particular to avoid collisions with one located in front of an own vehicle object has, the steps of: detecting an actual vehicle acceleration and a present vehicle speed of an own vehicle; Setting a driving sizes of the own vehicle acceleration-dependent profile; Answering a time course of a foreseeable acceleration of the host vehicle based on the current acceleration; Determining a Wegprofils of the own vehicle from the time course of the foreseeable acceleration; Detecting a current distance and a current relative speed of an object located in front of the own vehicle; Calculating the current absolute velocity of the object and the absolute actual acceleration of the object; Answering a time course of a foreseeable acceleration of the object based on its current acceleration; Determining a Wegprofils the object from the time course of the foreseeable acceleration; Comparing the Wegprofils of the own vehicle with the path profile of the object; and if intersect the two Wegprofile, determining an estimated time to collision of the own vehicle with the object; Setting a date prior to the estimated time of collision to compare this date with the particular estimated time of collision; and if the estimated collision time point is prior to the specified time, outputting a warning to the driver of the own vehicle.
