Moi et ma circonstance = I and my circumstance = Yo y mi circunstancia

2000
Catalogue to accompany an exhibition based on the theme of mobility, consisting of works by seventeen contemporary artists from Mexico. Abaroa provides brief descriptive analyses of the artists’ works (created between 1992 – 1999); connections between language, society and the body are considered in relation to the diminishing importance of national identity within cosmopolitan culture. Issues of private/public space, nomadism and hybridity are also addressed. Bartra’s essay focuses on the presence of melancholia within works by artists on the move. Renaissance, Romantic and Freudian concepts of melancholy are discussed. Cruzvillegas draws attention to exhibitions and events that influenced contemporary Mexican artists, and situates contemporary Mexican art within the context of postmodernism. His personal account of changes in Mexican culture touches on the following subjects: the formation of “the Generation of Groups;” the use of alternative spaces by Mexican artists; developments in Mexican art criticism, curating and art magazines; the effects of state funding for the arts in Mexico. List of works. Brief biographical notes. 28 bibl. ref.
