Report of the Committee on the Index to the Literature of American Economic Entomology

1963
In May 1960 Grant NSF-G12434 was approved by the National Science Foundation in the amount of 26, 300 for use over a two-year period to enable our Society, in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture library, to overcome the backlog of indexing in preparing the Index to the Literature of American Economic Entomology and to give time to formulate plans for financing future volumes. This grant financed the employment of an indexer and a clerk-typist to assist the U.S.D.A. library staff. INDEX XVII, the first completed with the aid of grant funds, was available for distribution in December 1960 but INDEX XVIII was not available for distribution until July 1962, and then only because work on the accumulation of references for the possible publication of INDEX XIX was discontinued in the fall of 1961 and work concentrated on completing INDEX XVIII. Thus, even with the aid of grant funds, indexing did not become current. When the National Science Foundation grant expired at the end of June 1962, there remained at least a year's work to produce INDEX XIX and then only if the Society could finance an indexer and clerk-typist to assist the U.S.D.A. library staff. Neither the Society nor the U. S. Department of Agriculture library were in position to finance the staff members needed to complete INDEX XIX and prepare future volumes. Regretfully, there was no alternative but to discontinue publication of the INDEX.
