The invention relates to a method for operating a machine (2, 3) of the tobacco-processing industry, in particular a filter (2) or multi-filter making machine or extrusion machine (3), for the preparation of rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry, wherein the machine (2, 3) at least one of a drive (14) driven conveyor organ (10, 50, 111, 112) for the rod-shaped articles of the tobacco-processing industry, wherein a rotary encoder (18) for the drive (14) is provided, so that the rotary encoder (18 ) by means of the drive (14) to the conveying member (10, 50, 111, 112) is coupled, and wherein the conveying member (10, 50, 111, 112) in the conveying direction a plurality of receptacles (12, 54) for rod-shaped articles comprising.
