Very soon, the Shinkansen system will reach is 30th year since the inauguration of Tokaido Shinkansen in 1964. And a new age of railway is about to start heading for the 21st century incorporating a variety of technological improvement achieved in various fields in the 30 year history of the system. With the opening of commercial service using trains named «NOZOMI» (HOPE in English) at a max. speed of 270 km/h as a trigger, railway technology of Japan has taken a big step forward. Further, as a result of various high-speed running tests conducted afterwards by the member companies for passenger service under the Japan Railways Group (hereinafter called JR Group), potentialities of railway are extended to new fields by far broader than those assumed by the past-day practical sense
