Preparing undergraduates for success through a multi-disciplinary, multi-campus research internship program focused on earthquake resiliency

2011
SUMMARY: Recent earthquakes in the US and around the world have shown that earthquake resilience is essential to building and sustaining urban communities. Earthquake resilience will thus play an increasingly important role in the professions associated with earthquake hazard mitigation. To educate the next-generation of professionals, the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) conducts a multidisciplinary summer research internship program for undergraduates focused on Engineering Earthquake Resilient Communities. PEER’s program demonstrates the success of using a multi-disciplinary, multi-campus approach to train future faculty and student researchers in the field earthquake engineering and mitigation.
