On "Aíy" as "Protection", Again

2003
A variety of evidence suggests that the element aig- in many ancient Greek names of places, people, and objects signified protection. Mapping shows that the place names are largely coastal: west of the Aegean they correspond roughly to the distribution of Middle Minoan and early Mycenaean trade and may have been spread about largely by Aegean sailors at places where they could protect their ships for the night. The personal names may originally have been titles signifying protectors (of the people). A case is made that the morpheme and its associations are more likely pre-Hellenic than Greek.
