Foodborne illness results in the hospitalization of hundreds of thousands of individuals and millions of dollars loss in proper disposal of food. Experimentation during the early 1900’s demonstrated the usefulness of bacteriophages as a cost-effective, easily obtainable, and safe antibacterial agent. Their use in healthcare and as a workplace cleaning agent is still recommended by the CDC and WHO.
