Sport and Play — Philosophical Interpretations

1973
Sport as a subject of philosophical study is a discovery of the most recent philosophy. It is in particular the development of modern competitive sport that has attracted philosophers. Sport is seen as an exemplary phenomenon to which general interpretations of the world may be applied and according to which they may be tested. In recent years a number of detailed philosophical interpretations of sport have been put forward, which are orientated towards phenomenology (Weiss), existentialism (Slusher), aesthetics (Frayssinet), or semiology (Bouet), or are influenced by modern theory of science (Lenk).
