Closing the Food Chain Loop Through Waste Prevention

2021
Abstract As the augmenting quantity of food waste and their unfolding economic, social, and environmental consequences are becoming more visible, the need for a new integrated framework for the management of the food supply chain (FSC) is becoming increasingly imperative. FSC management should be grounded on sustainable use of resources, maximizing materials and energy efficiency and implementing effective waste prevention strategies. This chapter attempts to present an overview of policies, strategies, and best practices that have been developed and/or implemented worldwide to address the food wastage challenge. Its fundamental aim is to highlight the prerequisites and means for the development of a holistic and cross-disciplinary approach to prevent food wastage. This involves the adoption of a new sustainable production and consumption paradigm and the integration of the circular economy concept throughout the FSC.
