Observation of Quantum-defect-assisted Polarization Mode Coupling in a Fiber Amplifier

We have observed, for the first time, quantum-defect-assisted polarization mode coupling in a fiber amplifier, which is a manifestation of stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering. The frequency-dependent gain/loss is characterized for the first time.
