Culture-based interactions among a group of secondary school teachers of physics undergoing active learning activities in a big urban setting in the Philippines

2013
This paper presents a post hoc analysis of a recent active learning workshop in physics to around 100 secondary school teachers in MetroManila. Reactions to the active learning method were analyzed from the perspective of the Filipino language, culture and psychology. It was observed that a number of Filipino approaches to learning like pakikipagkuwentuhan, pagtatanung-tanong and bayanihan support inquiry-based learning activities. Reflecting further on the concept of katuturan helps to understand how to overcome personalism and short-sightedness. These insights provide us with a clearer framework in designing questions and discussion sessions for lesson guides and help us to look with understanding at negative behavior in the participants and make them experience the longer lasting effect and benefits of employing the inquiry-based approach of teaching physics in the classroom.
