The Evolving Notion of Order

The notion of order in macroscopic physics has changed progressively during this century. This evolution is outlined in author’s book on this subject, briefly reviewed here. Some major turning points (including the introduction of the internal field, the collective ground state and symmetry breaking) are considered in detail.
