Genetic contribution of cows to future generation in Red Sindhi herd

The present study was conducted on 448 Red Sindhi cows. On an average, each cow produced 3.42±0.12 total calves during its stay in the herd, of these 1.59±0.07 were female calves and only 0.94 female calves/cow reached the milking herd which is less than one gene replication that could contribute again 10 future generalion. About 42% of total cows could not leave any female replacement and hence had no genetic contribution to the next generation for replicating their genes in the population. The CGR values among rest of the cows ranged from 0.5 in 34.8% cows to 3.0 in only 0.4% (2 cows). The average CGR was 1.21 for 23.1% of the total cows indicating that each of about one fourth of the total cows in the herd was more than twice replicating her genes to the future generation.
