Detection of defects in single and multilayer composite material models by numerical nondestructive testing simulations

2017
In numerical electromagnetic simulations of nondestructive testing methods, single and multilayer CAD models of woven glass and carbon fiber composites are analyzed to find intentionally introduced material defects. The models are excited by plane waves up to frequencies of 650 GHz (submillimeter wavelength) and by Gaussian pulses of 5 ps duration. The transmitted and reflected electric field patterns are analyzed in frequency and in time domain to get information about the different material defect types inside the composite structures.
