An Introduction to the Internet of Things

In this chapter we give a high-level overview and a basic introduction into the Internet of Things. We describe the evolution from the World Wide Web to a network of machines, the “Internet of Things” and we provide a brief introduction to related technologies and standards in M2M communication. Furthermore, we introduce the overall architecture of IoT systems. Last but not least, we give an overview of the use cases where IoT brings benefits—and the challenges that we face when developing and deploying IoT systems.
