Spatial and Temporal Characterization of Drought

Drought is difficult to define for common understanding. Several definitions are presented. The Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), the Palmer Drought Hydrologic Index (PDHI) and the Palmer Z Index (Z) as calculated for Utah climatic regions and presented as examples of spatial and temporal distributions of drought. Spatial and temporal distribution characterization of drought in Utah can be displayed using interactive computer graphics. Recent droughts are contrasted with historical wet periods. Contrasts are also made among climatic divisions.
