Code retargeting for CPU-based platforms

2017
This chapter focuses on the problem of mapping applications to CPU-based platforms, covering general code retargeting mechanisms, compiler options and phase ordering, loop vectorization, exploiting multicore/multiprocessor platforms, and cache optimizations. This chapter provides the fundamental concepts used for code targeting for shared and/or distributed memory architectures including the use of OpenMP and MPI, and thus covers important and actual topics required by programmers when developing or tuning applications for high-performance computing systems. We consider the topic of code retargeting important, as most high-level language like C/C++ do not have the necessary compiler support to automatically harness the full computational capacity of today's platforms.
