Confirmatory evidence for the efficacy of a seedling progeny test for resistance to potato foliage blight (Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary)

Examination of the field resistance to foliage late blight of a population of selected potato clones has clearly demonstrated the efficiency of a seedling blight screen in eliminating susceptible material from that population. The subsequent selection from amongst survivors of the screen of agronomically superior material compares favourably with an unexposed sample of the same population, confirming the applicability of a seedling screen in a breeding programme.
