NHS reforms and eye care services: quality, priority and competition

NHS eye services will increasingly be exposed to competition under the 2012 Health and Social Care Act. The scale of this is widely underestimated, as private sector companies see UK eye care as lucrative. NHS services can be at a disadvantage to private companies in tendering. Provision of medical eye care will increasingly be divided between public and private sector providers, with the NHS retaining complex cases.
