Asphalt Binder Recovery: A Theoretical and Experimental Study on Control Factors

2009
This paper describes how both in contractor quality control and in agency quality assurance a crucial role is played by information related to bitumen properties. Therefore, asphalt extraction and recovery procedures are a vital part of the quality control and assurance of asphalt pavement maintenance and rehabilitation projects. On the other hand, sensitivity of asphalt binder recovery test to changes of each of the main parameters of recovery procedures still needs to be investigated. Owing to the above-mentioned facts the main object of the paper has been confined to the analysis of the sensitivity of asphalt binder properties to recovering tests procedures. Information developed is going to be used to monitor performance trends of various lots of pavements, to improve the extraction and recovery process, as to stimulate the use of recycled asphalt pavements (RAP) in the normal practice pavement design, to guarantee the good performance of asphalt binder.
