Shaping the Futureof Intellectual DisabilityNursing in Ireland: supporting people with an intellectual disability to live ordinary lives in ordinary places: Executive Summary

2018
In a comprehensive examination of the contemporary role of the Registered Nurse Intellectual Disability (RNID) in Ireland a broad range of stakeholders’ views were sought. Responses were analysed to address the overall aim of the project: “to determine the future role of the registered nurse intellectual disability (RNID) who provides health and social care services to individuals with an intellectual disability and to their families and carers in this changing landscape”. An extensive literature review confirmed that there is a changing landscape driven by improved survival rates for children with complex health needs, the shift to community-based care with an increased focus on a social care model, and a growing ageing population with a wide diversity of health and social care needs.
