Multi-band antenna for mobile communication standards

2002
Nowadays numerous standards in mobile phones and short range links are emerging. The development of antennas covering all those allowed frequencies with only one element and one feeding appears to be an important goal [1]. For example, base stations for mobiles are mostly composed of different arrays of antennas, each array working for only one band. The purpose of the presented study is to develop a single antenna which can be able to offer good performances for all GSM, DCS, UMTS and also Bluetooth bands. This antenna was designed and optimised using FDTD tools, and measurements results of a prototype are detailed. Moreover a four elements square array is described. Higher gain is achieved with a conical radiation pattern, and the beam steering ability of such an array is discussed.
