Bamboo Charcoal and Pyrolysis Liquid Produced by Fast Pyrolysis Technology

2011
Bamboo, one of the fastrotation plant in Asia, is a good agent for absorbing CO2 when proceeds photosynthesis. In this study, a fast pyrolysis technology with a bubbling fluidizedbed reactor was applied to convert Makino bamboo sawdust into pyrolysis liquid and charcoal powder. Averaged product yields of pyrolysis liquid and charcoal were 60.8 wt% and 21.8 wt%, respectively. The pyrolysis liquid contained a lot of acetic acid, hydroxyacetone and acetaldehyde may be used as a biocide or a fertilizer and growthpromoting agent. The pyrolysis liquid had a heating value of 6.93 MJ/kg and a moisture content of 50.6 wt%. The pyrolysis liquid may replace the water in the combustion of waterfuel emulsion to enhance the combustion stability. Activated charcoal was obtained by steam with an activated charcoal recovery of 50 wt%. The pH values were increased from 9.25 of charcoal to 10.86 of activated charcoal. The high alkalinity of charcoal or activated charcoal may be applicable to soil amendments for acid soils.
