The Mediating Role of Moral Self-Concept among Physician: Compassion Regulations: A Measurement of Medical Student Development

2018
This study did not demonstrate differences in clinical judgments as a function of humanizing language, evaluations of the data provided evidence to suggest that the underlying issue with this study was a lack of differentiation between the humanizing and dehumanizing language conditions. This suggests not that the constructed model is inherently flawed, but rather that some aspect of how participants experienced the humanizing or dehumanizing language conditions was inappropriate. Ultimately, the outcomes of this study offers insight into how similar research could be better executed in the future. Furthermore, this study could potentially contribute to an understanding of how socio environmental factors shape the healthcare process. Closer examination of the results suggests that although the hypotheses were not supported, the specification of the overall model itself was not without some level of justification. In addition to such issues which are inherent to the design of the study, there are three plausible explanations which could, at least in part, provide some explanation as to why these particular presentations of the language conditions had no meaningful impact; these include the modality in which the experimental condition was delivered, respondent fatigue and noncooperation, and the manner in which humanizing and dehumanizing language were presented.
