New records of sandflies and description of a new species, Sergentomyia turfanensis sp. nov. in North-western China

1981
In recent years; a number of sandflies were collected from different districts in Sinkiang Eegion and Szechuan Province, China.Phlebotomus chinensis longiductus and the male of Sergentomyia sum were recorded for the first time while a new species was recently discovered in Turfan County, Sinkiang Urghur Autonomous Region. The latter species, Sergentomyia turfanensis was named after the place where it was first found. Its descriptions are as follows:Sergentomyia turfanensis sp. nov.In the female, the buceal cavity possesses a mushroom-like pigmented plate, and the armature consists of about 12 to 14 large pointed teeth, arranged in a row with their concavity backward. The pharyngeal armature is composed of numerous short ridged teeth. The spermatheca is made up of broad elliptical capsules with fairly-coarse connecting ducts. In the male, the buceal cavity is not pigmented, the buceal armature consisits of about 9 to 11 small and not well developed teeth arranged in a curvature. Th pharyngeal armature bears a resemblance to that of the female, but it is not so well developed. The male genitalia are of the minutus type, as the style has four terminal spines. The paramere is slender with a blunt tip pointed downwards. The penis is slender and tapered. The lateral lobes are nearly as long as the coxite. This new species resembles closely Sergentomyia, sintoni Pringle, 1953, but can be distinguished from it by the morphological characters of the buceal pigment and armature, the pharyngeal armature, the spermatheca and the male genitalia.Specimens of this new species of sandflies include: holotype female, allotype male and paratype 3 females and 2 males collected from the caves in Turfan County, Sinkiang Urghur Autonomous Eegion, China, from June to August, 1974.All these specimens are deposited in the Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Shanghai.
