MANAGING FIXED ASSETS WITH INTEGRATED GIS

This article addresses a problem faced by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB): that of multiple SBB sites each creating and maintaining their own departmental documentation. This results in data that is sometimes duplicated and of variable standards and quality. This in turn results in additional costs for the maintenance of multiple plants and can lead to costly and dangerous errors. Conditions in the SBB works service -- a heavy workload and limited manpower -- encourage individual SBB departments to develop isolated solutions. These solutions are difficult to coordinate and create redundant products which, meeting only specific needs, thwart company-wide solutions and standards. The article includes; new system requirements, the solution - Database for fixed Assets (DfA), application modules, and critical factors.
