Data to Monitor and Manage the Health Workforce

2019
Siyam, Diallo, Lopes and Campbell describe the extreme shortage of health workers worldwide and the importance of information to plan and project workforce needs. The chapter introduces National Health Workforce Accounts proposed by the Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health: Workforce 2030 to standardise the architecture of health workforce information and enhance interoperability between data systems. Set in a Health Labour Market framework, National Health Workforce Accounts use groups of indicators to inform policies to enhance the health workforce development and future planning, and specifically to deliver Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. The authors describe challenges, progress and future opportunities in strengthening and harmonising national information systems for human resources for health.
